Up early

Good morning. And I mean early morning. =) It’s amazing how much you can love your kids when they don’t do anything for you. Mine don’t mow the lawn yet or put food on the table or even keep the house clean, bit I sure love em lots. I’m laying on the couch right now with Wesley and he’s sleeping in my arms. I guess I could be frustrated that I’m not sleeping but I lay here content knowing that there will be a day when I don’t get to do this anymore.
Been thinking about dad a lot lately. Not really sure what to think. Heard today that the doctor told him there’s not much they can do. I will say that in awful glad we moved here. I don’t think I would’ve had this opportunity if we would have stayed in Junction. I know I want to be available for mom if she needs anything but wondering if she’s even going to ask.
I leave for Junction on Monday. Excited to travel again. I get to see the new office and also Danny Kuta. I’m really glad that we’ve decided to work together again. We made a great team at Grace and I’m excited to see what the Lord brings about now.
It’s funny because I haven’t thought about money in a long time. Not that I was okay to be poor for the rest of my life bit I certainly realize that God is my portion and not my Visa. =) Now that the prospect of making money is presenting itself I constantly have to keep my mind in check. “Lord help me rely on you.” I find myself more at peace knowing that God is providing for our family. It’s been a journey to get here and now that we are here and excited to be living totally dependent on God, I want everyone to have that. But I get impatient when they don’t. =) Hindsight is 20/20 right? Haven’t bought a lottery ticket in a while and I probably should, just to keep my values in check.

Like a Weaned Child With its Mother

Like a weaned child with its mother.

“But I have stilled and quited my soul; like a weaned child with its mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me.” – Psalm 131:2

It’s been a rough couple days.  Usually, I’m pretty good about checking my work and making things right.  Rarely, do I make a mistake that causes issues.  Not so lately.  =(  So, I pick myself up, bootstrap back to my feet and work.  I will fall to my knees and pray but usually to no avail to calm this feeling.

I sit in my chair in my office today and pull the Bible next to me and open up to Psalms, read a few verses then I get to this one.  I have read this verse before and have always thought it strange when the Bible mentions something so practical to everyday life; like weaning.

Being that Wesley is still being nursed, I decide to take a second and reflect on this verse.  At first glance, I would have figured the text to say something different like, “My soul is stilled like a nursing child.”  Wesley and most babies I’ve seen are calm and quite when nursing, so why would the psalmist mention a weaned child and attribute that to still and quiet?  Then it hit me!

A weaned child with its mother isn’t looking for anything more than the relationship.  They don’t want a handout and they aren’t thinking about what’s they can get out of being with mom.  They just want to be with mom!!!  A weaned child is still and quiet because they enjoy the presence of their mother.

Shouldn’t we all learn from this.  Our father desires to give us spiritual milk when we are growing up, but there comes a point at which we will need to cut ourselves off.  It’s at that point that we will be fed by the father, but we will be in His arms, safe and secure, and not thinking about what we can take away from the situation except for the relationship.  I encourage you to sit in your father’s lap, forget about bringing your troubles to him and how He can help you out of them, and just sit.  Be still, be quiet, and your soul will follow.

Like a weaned child with its mother.

Kindle Cliffs Notes

Here’s the latest and greatest from Lee’s mind.

There are some awesome books out there.  In my life, I’m usually too busy to pick up a book and read the whole thing through in one sitting.  Many times, especially with reference books like “Smashing WordPress“, I will want to skim through the book but don’t want to miss important parts.  Here’s where the genius starts.

If Kindle needs to make available an add-on that would allow you to use a “condenser highlighter”.  Thus you could read the book and just highlight the most important parts.  Then when the application asks you to open a book, you could open the “Condensed Version.”  Thus skipping all the pages that you don’t need to read and just giving you the main points.

I’m not finished!!!!  =)  What would be really great is if there were a whole bunch of people that have read the same book and “condense highlighted” their own passages.  Thus, you could have a “Popular Condensed Version”.  In essence, Kindle already does this with their “Popular Hightlights” section.  The problem is that when you click on a popluar highlighted section, you are sent to the entire book again.  This would allow you to, basically, buy a book, read it in one sitting by reading the “Condensed Version” and then later on you could read the whole thing.

Huh?  Whatcha think? Pretty cool, huh?  Anyway, this may be my attempt to be more productive or maybe perhaps to be more lazy.  Either way, I see it as a win-win-win situation.  =)  Who’s with me?!?!

My Dad

My dad’s life is a testimony!

Charles Pettijohn grew up dirt poor and the youngest of a large family. He didn’t have indoor plumbing or a TV set. He was the last of the kids to take a bath … in the same tub … in the same water. He was usually working several jobs to support himself and his family even when he started in the military.

If you know my dad at all you know that he lives in a house with 5 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, 2 living rooms, and is lakeside property. He is constantly buying everyone elses meals at restaurants. He owns 3 houses in 3 different states and is looking to buy another one if the price is right. He has a sailboat and even has his own golf cart of which he graciously lets my mom ride around and get stuck in the garden sometimes. My dad is not poor now. My dad’s life is a testimony that working hard and being smart with money can make you rich. Do you want to know how much my dad cares about having a testimony like that? NONE!

My dad was rarely respected early on. Working as a bagger he asked for his wedding day off and was denied. He was probably one of those kids my mom didn’t want me playing with. He wrecked his dad’s car and even skipped school … elementary school.

If you know my dad at all you know that when he walks in the room heads turn. You know that whether he is standing at a pulpit or in the middle of the living room and starts talking, people listen. He made it to full colonel, was the president of the home owner’s association, and was recognized as one of the fastest growing mortgage broker’s in Colorado Springs for a time. My dad’s life is a testimony that if you do the right thing, treat people how they want to be treated, and respect others, you yourself can be highly respected. Do you want to know how much my dad cares about a testimony like that? NONE!

My dad wasn’t perfect. He was divorced after 17 years of marriage. He made mistakes that can’t be spoken here. He yelled at his kids. He lied and stole. He has a past that would make many of us blush.

If you know my dad at all you know that he cares for people a great deal. You know that his kids and grandkids are very precious to him now. He welcomes them with open arms and makes sure they are comfortable in his home. If you know my dad, you know that he walks with God daily and strives to shine his light to others. If you know my dad, you know that Jesus Christ is the absolute most important thing to him in the entire universe. My dad’s life is a testimony that no matter who you are, God absolutely loves you and sent his son to take the place for your sins so you can spend eternity, starting today, with Him in relationship. Do you want to know how much my dad cares about a testimony like that? A LOT!

Friends, to honor my dad means that I would speak words that he would speak. I and my dad are not alike in many ways. He doesn’t like piercings. We have different ideas about the church. And I couldn’t tell you a sports statistic if my life depended on it. But you know what we both agree on. You are important to God.

We all, like my dad, have screwed up in our lives somewhere. We break God’s heart when we look to ourselves for how to live. God’s laws have been broken since Adam ate of the tree in the garden and someone’s gotta pay the price. God wouldn’t be someone worthy of worship if he let a couple things slide here and there. If you’ve tried to kid yourself in the past by thinking you’re not that bad, I plead with you when you lay down tonight and you’re all alone with your thoughts, be honest and ask yourself, “Am I really as good a person as I say I am?” I can tell you with all assurance that I and my dad are united on this and our answers would be, “NO!” God’s word tells us when we humble ourselves in his sight, we are lifted up. By telling God, “I am a sinner and I have broken your commandments.” You start on a road to recovery like AA only dreams of. God begins to work in your life and at the moment when you kneel down before God, Jesus Christ steps to your side and says, “My brother, let me walk with you and show you a more excellent way.”

If you are here today and don’t know what it’s like to wake up in the morning and not have the guilt and shame of your life on your shoulders then it’s time to talk. My dad’s life is a testimony my friends and the only testimony my dad cared about was making sure that the people in his life knew there was a God, knew he was holy, and knew that we could live in a relationship with Him. If you knew my dad then you know he would invite you to talk to someone who could give you the answer you’ve been looking for and start on a journey that you never thought imaginable.

My Hero Cookie

I woke up the other night with another great idea for a business.  In my dream I was in a mall and was outside a cookie store.  This store had switchback lines (probably leftover from the Disney experience) leading to several cash registers.  [Let me preface by the fact that I love the In-N-Out idea of having a quality product with limited choices.]  You could choose from 5-7 cookies (Sugar, Peanut Butter, World’s Best, Oatmeal Raisin, Sugar Free (using Truvia), White Chocolate and Macadamia Nut, etc.).  Before you get to the register, you have several 6″ x 6″  paper bags to choose from each with different non-profit organizations (Red Cross, etc.).  Once you choose a bag, you tell the cashier what cookie you want and then each cookie you buy would go towards funding for that organization.  Of course they are going to ask you, “Do you want milk with that?”  There might be a stand to add icing and sprinkles too.

Anyway, this would be a non-profit organization itself.  Most days you could choose what organization you want to donate too, and sometimes there would be weeks where the company would choose a relief to give to in light of current events, like the Japan Tsunami.

I even thought about utilizing volunteers in the community for workers and having local grocers donate ingredients.

Just another idea from Lee.  =)

Abundant Life

Starting to read another book called, “God has a wonderful plan for your life.” it swings the pendulum from the modern Christian message and tries to get people to understand that the goal of the Christian life is not to be happy.
So often we think that Jesus Christ is in our lives to make us happy and give us stuff. This seems to stem from the fact that the world keeps telling us the same thing about what it can offer. The world reminds us that we are unhappy with what we have and that if we just buy this or get that we will be happy and live a full life.
I guess the world and the modern message are still focussed on one thing, “you”!
Jesus didn’t come to give is life so that we could focus on ourselves again. He came so that we could focus on him and on others. In fact, it seems more appropriate that we focus on others because of what he did for us.
Jesus came to give life and give it more abundantly. The abundant life is not one focussed on ourselves. It is not filled with toys and it certainly not a happy one all the time. Who the heck wants happiness all the time. I for one count it of great value that I have Jesus Christ with me every step of the way. Paul was excited to be in chains for Christ, because he knew that his sufferings made others strong. He also knew that he was never alone.
My daughter often wants to be awesome at everything she does. Let me remind you that she is awesome at lots of things already. She is still struggling with reading and writing fast. I keep telling her that if she wants to do those things fast then she needs to practice them over and over.
This is painful for her. She doesn’t like to practice. Kinda reminds me of myself. I hated practicing. I wanted to play in the basketball game. I wanted to play a concert, not practice.
Practice is not easy but what good ever came from from what was easy. The most wonderful thing about this life is that although we may go through lots of tough times, we are never alone.

Philippians 1:18

“But what does it matter?  The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached.  And because of this I rejoice.”  - Philippians 1:18

The late Colonel Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken is remembered by a small band of airline passengers more for his compassion than his secret recipe. During a flight, one young infant was screaming and crying. The feverish mother tried desperately to calm the child but to no avail. She was even assisted by the flight attendants but nothing seemed to work. Finally, the Colonel asked if he might hold the baby. He gently cradled the child and rocked her to sleep. The plane’s cabin became still and quiet. When Sanders returned to his seat a passenger said, “We all appreciate what you did for us.” The stately old man replied, “I didn’t do it for us. I did it for the baby.”  (Humor Connection, Vol. 1013, 1996)

Paul wanted the gospel preached to all the nations.  He got his wish.  It may not have been the way that he expected or even wanted it to happen, but it happened all the same.  He even said that he rejoiced because Christ was preached.  He didn’t rejoice because Christ was preached in exactly the way he would have done it.  Paul had a mission and it was accomplished.
When we are given a task to do, the person who tells us to do it probably has a certain way they want it done.  Their ultimate goal for us is to get it done, though.  That leaves the choice up to us.  My father always told me, “We can do this the easy way or the hard way?”  I’m sure his choice for me was to do it the easy way, but if it had to be done the hard way then at least he knew I would have learned a valuable lesson; the easy way is easier.  Every day we make choices.  Which way are we going to choose?  The easy way is not always the fastest way.  The hard way is usually the quickest way in the short run.  When you are finished with a document, you can either file it where it’s supposed to go or you can throw it on the floor behind your desk.  Which is the better choice?  We know what the final goal is at the end of the day and that is what our main focus should be, but take the time during the day to do things the right way and in the end you’ll see it really was the “easy way.”
I see lots of comments and commentaries on how the “other” church isn’t doing things right.  ”They’re too contemporary!”  ”They’re too stuffy and self-righteous.”  I’m all for preaching the truth, but there comes a point at which I need to let them be responsible for their actions and I’m responsible for mine.  I preach the truth that is revealed in scripture.  If I’m wrong, I will accept criticism with gratitude and move forward.  The next time we hear something about another church let’s praise God that Jesus is being preached, and pray that either their hearts will soften or ours!

Philippians 1:17

“The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains.”  - Philippians 1:17

I am a scientist by nature.  Hypothesizing and experimentation are one of my favorite past times.  After 5 years of marriage I know exactly what to do to make my wife mad.  This is referred to as “pushing buttons.”  This process didn’t take long at all to perfect.  First, I experienced my wife in an irritable state.  Then, I created a hypothesis about what I did to aggravate her.  Finally, 10 minutes later, I experimented by repeating the situation previous to her state of frustration.  Voila!  Just like when you add vinegar and baking soda together, you get a volcano.
We all know what to do to our friends, kids, or significant others to push their buttons.  All we have to do is recreate the situation we experienced before and it works every time.  Paul’s followers that were located where he was imprisoned practiced this same routine.  They saw what happened to Paul when he preached the gospel.  They figured that they would get more attention because they knew how to push the authorities’ buttons; preaching about the gospel.
We here at Grace are like a family.  We go shopping, we pay bills, we have a fridge.  We even have kids that leave home, but come back every once in a while just to check up (Superintendents).  Therefore, we know the people around us to the point that we know what buttons to push to get a certain result.  Maybe not a desired result, but a result all the same.  I say it’s each of our responsibilities to know what it is about each other that will make us frustrated and strive to not do those things.  We are team, whether we want to be or not.  Teams need to work towards a common goal and as I’ve stated in earlier emails our goal is to work towards the glory and praise of God and build His kingdom (and a couple houses along the way).  It’s up to us to determine how efficient and effective we want to be.  My theory is, the more we work together, the easier the work will be.

Obviously, pushing buttons is never done out of love.  Love is the epitome of selflessness.  When we act out of selfish ambition, we are determined to be selfish.  Paul’s preaching of the gospel, I believe, was the result of laying down his life everyday.  I often wonder why he was imprisoned so much and thus not being effective by preaching the gospel to mass crowds.  God had different plans; specifically to preach the gospel to centurions and political figures.  Reminds me of when Jesus crossed an entire lake to save one man.  (Mark 5:1-20)

Philippians 1:14

“Because of my chains, most of the brothers in the Lord have been encouraged to speak the word of God more courageously and fearlessly.”  - Philippians 1:14

I am an Air Force brat.  About every 4 years of my childhood my family would uproot and move to a different location.  I have lived in Texas, Illinois, Alabama, Oklahoma, Colorado Springs, and even overseas for 4 years in Saudi Arabia.  That was an experience!  The word BBQ had a completely different meaning there.  A BBQ in Saudi included inviting the entire family out to the desert to roast a lamb.  Not just roast but haul it up there, cut it’s throat, drain it and then proceed to cook it on a spit in front of everyone.  When it was done you sat it on a table with some rice and other delicacies and then if you wanted a piece, you took it … with your hands.  Aside from the food, and the school which included kids from about 45 different countries, we had our own underground church.  Church was different over there.  We met in a house on a compound which was like a country club for Armed Service personnel and out of country contractors.  One rule that was very important there was to not all park in front of the house on Friday mornings (which was when the weekend fell on).  If you were a Saudi and were caught confessing Jesus most likely they would take you out to the desert and kill you.  If you were military you would be deported immediately.  Many of the people that met in the house were living in Saudi working in the oil fields but had a tremendous heart to reach those for Jesus Christ.  One of the many stories that touched my heart was hearing about Bible smuggling in the airport.  Some stories included the officials finding Bibles in their suitcases and then immediately throwing them in jail.  Many other stories included travelers ahead of those who had Bibles in their suitcase and their things were searched thoroughly and then when it was their turn they would just let them go without touching their things.  My favorite story was hearing about a missionary who set his things on a table to be searched.  After reaching the bottom of the suitcase and finding numerous amounts of Bibles in the bottom, they put everything back, zipped up the suitcase, and let them go through.
We as Christians have a choice.  Do we speak courageously about Jesus Christ or do we let a situation slide because we think the circumstances aren’t perfect.  Opportunities arise daily to share the love of Jesus, and we all sometimes miss them.  Perhaps the opportunities include helping someone change their tire on the side of the highway.  On the other hand, the opportunity may arise when someone tells you the trouble they are going through and they don’t know any way to cope with it.  Whatever the circumstances may be, we, as Christians, have the responsibility to help.
Paul wasn’t mad about his situation.  He used it as an opportunity to boldly share his faith.  Because of that many others were encouraged.  What catches my eye about this verse the most is the word, “most.”  God’s perfect will would have included, “all” of the brothers in the Lord.  We as humans don’t respond the way God wants us to all the time though. However, the wonderful thing about grace is that we can start anytime.  God calls us to him constantly.  Repentance is the act of turning from where we are now and going another direction.  If you feel the Spirit moving you in a different direction, pray for guidance and if it persists, then move in a different direction.  Once you start acting on your impulses that are prompted by the spirit, you will never be disappointed. As I stated in the beginning, we as Christians have a choice.  Do we choose to hear stories like the one above and hide behind our masks of insecurity and shy away from a situation or do we choose to be encouraged to tell others about Jesus in a country where it is still legal and we have the freedom to do so.  What choice will we make today?
