I had the distinct pleasure of talking over coffee with my pastor Darrell Jung. I am always impressed at Darrell’s ability to relate with people on a personal level. Many times I think of pastors as focusing on their entire congregation, and I know Darrell has that in mind, but it’s always a breath of fresh air when I get to meet with him personally.
We talked about a variety of topics but the one that stood out to me more is that he inspired me to pay more attention to my physical fitness. As the wise saying goes, “Don’t start digging a well when you’re thirsty.” Physical fitness is the same way and I realized more than ever, that my physical fitness choices now will affect my relationship with my grandkids.
“Huh?”, you might say.
And not just physical choices, but think about it. When you eat healthy, exercise, and get good sleep on a consistent basis, you will of course enhance your own fitness level, but it will make a difference when your grandkids come along. My mother is one of the sweetest grandmothers I know. She dotes on her grandchildren and feeds them exactly what they want, takes them out to lunch and every birthday blesses them with a trip to Chuck E Cheese and the closest department store to pick out a new outfit. In addition, she has exercised since I have known her for the past 33 years and has made wise diet choices. This allows her to walk her grandkids through the garden and pick tomatoes off the vine. She spends hours and hours perfecting the outside of her home in order to make an environment that invites her family and especially all 8 of her grandkids.
What other choices affect your grandkids?
Your character, integrity, and honor play a huge role. By taking the time to evaluate your own strengths, weaknesses, and God-given talents, you start to discover your purpose which will affect your choices. Which will affect your actions. Which ultimately affect your legacy.
When you start with a foundational knowledge that you are created by God, loved by a savior, and developed by his Spirit, you start realizing that you were made for a purpose and that the choices you make now should line up with the purpose you were created for. The choices you make today, you must live with for the rest of your life. The rest of your life will affect those around you including your family you see now and their families which may still be to come.
I don’t know what my grandchildren look like, but I love them already and have resolved to make choices today that will make a positive effect on them and my own children in the future.
My thanks to Darrell and God bless you all!
